Everyone knows it is important to drink water but have you ever tried lemon water first thing in the morning? Why should we drink a glass of lemon water each day? There are many reasons but here are a few!
- Lemon water has an alkalizing effect because of its’ high alkalizing mineral content.When your body’s ph balance errs on the side of acidity then you are more susceptible to inflammation. Maintaining a more alkaline ph “improves metabolism, immune cell protection, proper blood flow, and weight regulation” (Food Babe Way).
- Lemon water stimulates the liver. The liver is the main detoxifying organ and it is most active in the morning. Drinking lemon water helps speed up the detoxifying process that is naturally occurring.
- Lemon water improves your digestion. Drinking lemon water stimulates your salivary glands and sends a signal to your body to begin digestion.
- Lemons contain important nutrients including vitamin C and limonin. Vitamin C is responsible for fighting cell damage and chronic inflammation and accelerating wound healing. Limonin “prevents cancer, strengthens blood vessel linings, elevates beneficial enzymes in the liver, and reduces artery clogging cholesterol” (Food Babe Way).
Suggestion: Drink 8-12 oz. of lukewarm water with ½ a lemon squeezed into it first thing in the morning. Your liver will thank you!
